Flash is developed by Adobe Systems, and can refer both to the software used for design (.FLA) and the actual output of that software (.SWF).  Flash is a rich media standard that in its simplest explanation is used to add animation and interactivity to web pages in order to “bring them to life,” however, the reach of this technology now encompasses the ability to stream video online and to create various RIAs (Rich Internet Applications.)
